Career profiles

Capita is a dynamic and rapidly growing company. We have created a rewarding environment where staff are inspired and motivated to adopt and deliver new ways of working, transforming and delivering services for our clients. We work across many different sectors, and so have a very diverse range of jobs, at all different levels across our business units. Take a look at the career profiles below to see a sample of the jobs available.

Deputy Head of Corporate Advisory, Registrars

"Capita obviously regards its employees as its key asset." Phil

Deputy Head of Corporate Advisory

My role is essentially business development – attracting new corporate clients to Capita following an initial public offering (or flotation), or an introduction to the stock markets in London. I am also an advisor to existing clients or contacts in terms of how best to structure a specific corporate event and then to manage that event through to a conclusion. My contacts typically include investment banks, law firms, accountants and PLC clients.

I started my career ten years ago at Northern Registrars, based up in Yorkshire, as a shareholder services administrator – basically at the bottom of the ladder. I had worked my way up to an assistant relationship manager by the time Capita bought us in 2003. Any concerns I had about being bought by a larger company were all answered pretty quickly in a series of detailed integration workshops accompanied by constant updates to staff around changes and new ways of operating.

I was impressed by the level of transparency and the efficacy of communications. I knew that I would be happy working for a company that obviously  regarded its employees as its key asset.

While with Capita, I progressed to being a relationship manager and then a business development manager, which brought about my move to London. Through an internal restructure I was then made Head of UK Business Development and not long after that we had another restructure and I became known by my new title.

Capita has supported me wholeheartedly in getting the qualifications I need to move ahead in my career. I was sponsored to complete my certificate in Company Secretarial Practice, as well as my Investment Administration Qualification. Next I plan to embark upon my Securities Institute Diploma which is seen as roughly equivalent to a post grad degree, and a benchmark for finance professionals in the UK.

I think my favourite part of the job is when we’re approached by a client with a problem or issue, or just a general headache on something, and they ask for my advice and experience as to how to deal with it. The fact I can go away, organise internal meetings, speak to industry experts and then present back to the client a solution for their business is extremely rewarding.

On the whole I think the term ‘can-do attitude’ tends to be overused in the business world, but at Capita, from first hand experience, it is basically spot on!

Professional Qualifications Trainer

"My disability has never been a barrier - Capita is committed to my personal development." Paula

Professional Qualifications Trainer

The insurance industry can seem very complicated – and definitely requires specific knowledge. So my job is to ensure that our employees get all the training they need. I’m responsible for an apprenticeship program as well as development programs to enable our employees to achieve Charted Insurance Institute qualifications. I run weekly workshops for the exams and meet NVQ candidates to discuss their progress.

I first joined Capita ten years ago on a temporary basis within business support – and luckily for me, Capita wanted to keep me as a permanent employee. A great opportunity then came up as a departmental trainer, training underwriting procedures. During this time I was developed further, moving away from training, and being made responsible for a team of telephony operators which gave me very valuable experience.

I had uncovered a passion for training and development however and thanks to a restructure, that’s exactly what I do now. That’s the great thing about Capita – opportunities pop up all the time! I’ve trained products and procedures in all areas of the business and worked with our branded business partners developing and delivering training programs for their brands.

I often work off the site, travelling to our partners to deliver training programs, and am often found at our local college. Through Capita I have also gained industry related qualifications myself, as well as a range of internal courses to fulfil my role. The next thing for me is to complete a Training Diploma and a Diploma in Insurance – also sponsored by Capita.

A few years ago, I had a year’s break enjoying the arrival of my little boy and upon my return requested part time working hours in the same role, which Capita agreed to.  I have to say that I’ve felt so lucky in all sorts of ways to be employed by Capita. Not least because I have a disability, which has meant that at times it has been difficult to fulfil some work duties.

Capita has always supported me during these periods by adjusting my duties. My disability has never been a barrier and they are committed to my personal development and career. Overall, I am very proud of my role within Capita and enjoy helping the business to invest in their employees by developing others.

Team Manager, Business Travel

"At 25 years old I feel like I've come such a long way already." Mark

Team Leader, Business Travel

I joined Capita through a happy accident I guess. Previously I’d been working for a large hotel chain, managing weddings, banquets and conferences. I stumbled across Lonsdale Travel, which was part of Capita, at a recruitment fair. I applied for a job there and became a conference consultant. Shortly afterwards, we became Capita Business Travel. In a nutshell, we cover all of a business’s travel needs – rail, air, hotel and conference and event management services.

Relatively swiftly, I was promoted from a consultant looking after two large clients, to senior consultant with over 100 accounts. A fantastic opportunity then cropped up, after a temporary restructure to cover a colleague’s maternity leave, and I was promoted to Conference Coordinator. This meant more responsibility and management of a small team. The experience I gained then paved the way to my current role as a team manager.

My day-to-day activities include management of the team and its workload and daily activities, as well as continual process improvement projects. I‘ve only been in this role for four months, but really enjoy working with the people that I do and coaching and improving my team to be the best it can be.

There are plenty of opportunities here to develop your current skills, as well as explore different ones. In fact, I’m about to go on the Capita managers’ course which I’m looking forward to. And it works both ways – Capita is always keen to hear your ideas too and, fortunately for me, a few of mine have successfully been put into practice. I’ve been given freedom by my managers to change working processes as I see fit (with approval of course!) as well as the opportunity to be involved in some business projects, including the design and development of a new computer system.

Basically, I like the way Capita does things, both in terms of its business and its culture. I hope to develop as a people manager within my current role, then progress to managing client accounts – experiencing a different side of management and expanding my skills. At 25 years old, I’m still at the start of my career but I feel like I’ve come such a long way already.

Senior Manager, Projects

"Capita is a company which provides umpteen opportunities to every individual." Diljeeth

SEnior Manager Projects

The Projects team manages and delivers a variety of projects – ranging from process migrations, infrastructure, outsourcing deal acquisition and integration and system implementations. We also run projects around business improvements and internal cost efficiency initiatives. Basically, I manage programs in any of these areas, as required.

I was an employee of Prudential Process Management Services and transferred to Capita India as part of the deal with Prudential back in 2008. I joined as a key resource and project manager of the integration project between Capita India and Prudential. Since then, I have been presented with so many opportunities, on different projects, as well as a move from Mumbai to Bangalore and then another to Pune, which is where I am based now.

Along the way, Capita has sponsored me to take Leadership development training at XLRI, one of the top 5 business schools in India, as well as PRINCE2 Practitioner training. PRINCE2 is an internationally recognised project management method and invaluable for the work I do.

A typical day involves a lot of running around! I love the fact that I am handling multiple stakeholders – and managing and delivering against their expectations. I also enjoy the little (and not so little) surprises every single day has in store for me. There’s definitely an energy in the office, there’s always something happening.

When I was given an option to transfer over from Prudential to Capita, I knew that I would have the potential to grow alongside the business. Capita India is an integral part of the Capita Group and it’s exciting to be part of something so successful.

Capita is a company which provides umpteen opportunities to every capable individual. What it seeks in return is the readiness to work as well as flexibility and adaptability to situations. You raise your hand and you get the opportunity to learn and get noticed.

IT Systems Integration Director

"Capita has provided me with the opportunity to progress within the same organisation....." Paul

IT Systems Integration Director

For me, Capita has provided the opportunity to progress within the same organisation, with the same ethos – but working for different businesses, on very different projects. The huge breadth of services and markets we operate in means that the prospects for career change are fantastic…and all under one roof!

I joined Capita in April 2002, as a Change Manager on the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) contract, and was responsible for the service covering both business and IT change. After the launch of the service in August that year, I became Head of Programme at CRB. The Capita Board of Directors then asked me to move to TfL Congestion Charging in 2005 as Director of Programmes. In October 2007 I took on the role of Operational Services Director within Capita IT Services, again at the request of the Board.

My current role began in May this year and I am now responsible for the management and delivery of all change to our customers, as well as all application services activity. By bringing these activities together we have a function truly able to transform a customer‘s business.

A typical day for me starts with a drive to one of our many offices, where I spend the first hour going through emails and setting out what I want to achieve that day. I’m usually in meetings most of the day, either internal or with customers and suppliers. A large part of my day is providing constant support and guidance to my team. And that’s my favourite part of the job – developing my team and seeing people progress their careers. Then it’s either a drive home, or a stay in a hotel.

I love the fact that Capita creates an environment which allows people to perform. You are given the empowerment and capability to make decisions, which is very refreshing. To me, it feels like running your own business – but without all the stresses that brings.

The culture is very simple – honesty, no surprises and delivery on your commitments. If you can do those then you will get on well. It is a great environment for people who like to take a risk and who love change.

Head of Service Management, Software Services

"There is always a potential career path for you." Ian

Head of Service Management

I first joined Capita in 2003 as a temp on the help desk… seven years later and I’m still here! I’m now Head of Managed Services, responsible for the managed payments infrastructure in Capita’s payment management division. We provide organisations with payment solutions, ranging from cash over the counter to online, telephone and mobile card payment systems. Most of our customers tend to be within local government, so when you call your council to pay council tax, or a parking fine, you could well be using a Capita payment system.

A typical day starts with a meeting with my team where we look at the performance statistics and figures from the day before, as well as any positives or concerns. This daily brief gives us foresight of any issues that may be coming our way, ensures we have the right resource available and ultimately helps improve the overall quality of our service.

As well as ensuring the day-to-day stability of our service, I am also responsible for maintaining our status as PCI DSS level 1 compliant – the highest level of information and electronic payment security compliance available.

It was Capita’s reputation as a market leader that first attracted me, as well as the employee security that comes from its consistent, organic growth. There is always a potential career path for you, if you want to take it.

There are also plenty of opportunities to do something outside of your normal working day aswell. Earlier this year, I was one of the lucky few who made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, alongside a team of fellow Capita employees. Between us we managed to raise over £130,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, Capita’s charity partner at the time.

I love my job and really enjoy the level of responsibility that comes with it. I believe that, in Capita, if you set examples to your colleagues ands others around you, opportunities to develop your career will always come your way.

Customer Service Manager, Insurance

"Capita looks after its people and rewards them accordingly." Linda

Customer Service Manager

If I had to sum up Capita, I’d say it was a business that looks after its people, and rewards them accordingly. I’ve been with Capita for ten years now and have seen my career take me from a claims advisor, to a customer service manager.

I was working for Eastgate when it was acquired by Capita and, despite a few initial reservations at being bought by another company, I found that Capita opened up all sorts of avenues. I’ve always been dedicated to my job and, as a result, seen my career take off, through a variety of roles and new, exciting challenges.

I now work within BDML, Capita’s general insurance intermediary and third party administration arm. Basically, we provide the customer services for insurance partners such as Admiral, Asda, Halifax, Sainsbury’s and esure. My team takes calls from policyholders and deals with any changes to their policies, payments and queries.

My role involves managing the operation of the floor, to make sure we have the correct resource to achieve our agreed service levels, supporting my two team leaders and supporting my manager with any ad hoc requests.

I’ve also become more involved in project work, outside of my day-to-day responsibilities and, earlier this year, a new department was launched when our pet insurance division took on Sainsbury’s pet insurance. This provided all sorts of new opportunities, as we were dealing with sales, whereas previously we had only dealt with customer service roles.

Capita has so many things to offer individuals coming into the business. There are many options and careers paths available to you and, on top of that, we have a good pension and share save scheme.

I also like the fact that charity activities are very high on Capita’s agenda. Capita Charity Week is always great fun as you get to dream up all sorts of different ideas to raise money for Capita’s charity partner. Our team decided on a sponsored rowing competition. I also hold breakfast events and raffles at work for a charity I support personally, Cancer Research UK.

All in all, Capita is a pleasure to work for!
