Capita Symonds has been appointed as the civil engineering designer for a proposed runway extension at London Southend Airport.
An aviation and infrastructure team from the Bristol office won the contract after a competitive pitch
The project comprises the design of the 300m runway extension itself, design for the diversion of a public road across the site, reprovision of a children's playground and car parking, and the careful dismantling and relocation of a churchyard wall.
Construction work on the highway diversion is scheduled to start in the autumn while work on the runway is expected to begin early in 2011.
The project is part of a wider redevelopment of the airport by owners Stobart Air including a new terminal, ATC tower, and railway station. Due for completion by the autumn of 2011, the scheme is expected to enable 6700 new jobs while catering for over two million passengers by 2020.
